Adding a New Item to a TypeList

After Creating a New TypeList, you are forwarded to the Manage tab for the list.  Use the quick add box there or click the “Add a new Item” link to add a new item to the list.

Or, in the shortcuts area for your TypeList on your TypeLists tab, click the New ItemNew Item link.  This opens the popup window to add a new item:

1 Enter the information

Fill in the fields for the TypeList with the data for the item you would like to add.  The fields for the TypeList depend on the type of list you are working with.

See Types of TypeLists for more information about the different TypeLists you can create.

Here are some tips for adding a new item to a TypeList:

People TypeList

Enter a URL in the quick-add field, such as:

http://mena.typepad.com

Information about the person is returned if the site has a FOAF feed and the fields in your TypeList will fill in automatically with this data.

Link TypeList

Enter a URL in the quick-add field, such as:

http://www.typepad.com

The title of the page is automatically returned and appears in the link title field:

TypePad: Hosted Weblog Service
Reading TypeList

Enter an ISBN to quickly add a new book.

Music TypeList

Enter the song information.

2 Press “Add”

The new item will be added to your TypeList.  You can fill in any remaining fields or edit the existing fields if you’d like and then press the “Save Item” button.  You can also click “Add Another Item” to add another item to the list.

If you did not add the TypeList to your template when you created the list, you can do this by Displaying a TypeList on Your Weblog.

Why can’t TypePad find a cover thumbnail for my book or music item?

When you enter a book or music item in a TypePad list, TypePad tries to find a cover thumbnail using Amazon Web Services.  This could fail for any number of reasons: the book or album isn’t listed in Amazon’s database; the book or album name was misspelled; Amazon’s web services are down; etc.

To try the search again with different search terms, enter it as a new item in the TypeList.

Using QuickPost with TypeLists

You can also add items to your TypeLists Using the QuickPost Bookmarklet.  When posting with QuickPost, select the tab for the type of list, and select the list to post to.

QuickPost with Media TypeLists

If you’re visiting Amazon.com and you want to quickly post a Reading or Music TypeList item, all you have to do is use QuickPost and the ASIN will automatically be filled in on the QuickPost bookmarklet:

Click on the QuickPost bookmarklet link when you’re on the product’s page and click to either the Reading or Music TypeList tab to select the list.  Then click the add button next to the field with the number.

Importing TypeList Content

(Importing TypeLists is available with Plus and Pro membership.)

You can import content in OPML format into an existing TypeList.  If you have been previously using a tool that created OPML output and you wanted to import the content (such as a blogroll) into one of your TypeLists, you would use the import steps to bring your content into TypePad.

First, create the TypeList by Creating a New TypeList if you haven’t already.

On your TypeLists tab, click the name of the TypeList you would like to import into.  Then, click the Import/Export link to enter the page for importing content:

1 Choose Option A or B

You can import from a web address (A), or from a file from your computer (B).  Enter the URL of the file, or upload the file using the Browse button.

2 Press “Import”

Click the button and your TypeList content will be imported.  You can view the items that were added by clicking the “View the items in your list..” link shown after importing.

What tools can I export from?

A variety of tools outside of TypePad, such as news aggregators, outliners and link managers provide OPML exports.

If you’re unsure if the tool you’re currently uses exports to OPML, check out its documentation or web site for more information.

How do I import my BlogRoll from blogrolling.com into my People list?

Log in to your Blogrolling account.  On the members page, click on the “Get Code” link.  Scroll down to the OPML section and copy the URL in the text box.

Then use the steps above, and paste the URL you have copied into Option A on the Import/Export page.

Exporting TypeList Content

(Exporting TypeLists is available with Plus and Pro membership.)

TypeList data can be saved as an OPML file.  Share the file with another user, import it into another one of your TypeLists or create a backup stored on your desktop computer.

On your TypeLists tab, click the name of the TypeList you would like to export.  Then, click the Import/Export link to enter the page for exporting content:

1 Click the “Export to OPML” link

The link for this is located in the Export to a file section.  Clicking the link will pop up the file save box for your computer to save the file.
