Templates in the TypePad system are your method of defining the design and layout of your site. Templates describe the exact layout of your weblog in HTML.
This document explains more about Advanced Template Sets and provides an overview of the most commonly-used template tags. It also links to the default templates. You can use these as examples to work from, or restore your weblog templates from them if something goes wrong in your template creation.
Advanced Template Sets are templates that can be customized through direct editing of HTML, CSS and TypePad template tags. Advanced Template Sets are created when existing designed are converted to Advanced Template Sets (see Designing Your Weblog).
In actuality, TypePad's Custom CSS feature should be adequate to meet most people's design needs. Most designers should find TypePad's CSS and class structure easy to work with. Using Custom CSS, a designer can easily create variants on existing layouts, modify and tweak existing styles, and also add background images throughout a weblog to create technically advanced designs.
On the other hand in rare circumstances, Custom CSS may be inadequate to meet the demands of your weblog's design requirements. In such cases Advanced Template Sets allow you to take complete control over every aspect of your weblogs design, layout and HTML structure.
Another reason to use advanced templates is when you need to import an existing weblog from another application or service into TypePad.
Users should be aware, however, that when a design is converted to an Advanced Template Set, many features that will make future weblog design changes easier will be disabled.
