What are Earnings?
TypePad Earnings are the revenues generated by Text Ads and the TypePad Tip Jar. To learn how to enable text ads, see Configuring Text Ads. To learn how to enable your Tip Jar, see Configuring Your Tip Jar. Earnings are available only to Pro users. TypePad Earnings is a new commerce feature for which we have updated our Terms of Service agreement. View Commerce Terms of Service.
What features allow me to generate earnings on TypePad?
TypePad allows you to earn revenues through Text Ads (see Configuring Text Ads) and TypePad Tip Jar (see Configuring Your Tip Jar).
Your earnings from text ads are based on the number of valid clicks on ads viewed by readers of your weblog. Valid clicks earn different revenue based on the amount advertisers paid for the placement of the respective ads. Total Text Ad Revenue (listed in the Earnings Summary module on the Track Your Earnings page) refers to your total earnings from Text Ads since you first activated the feature.
Invalid clicks are those generated by prohibited means intended to artificially increase click or impression counts on your weblogs. Six Apart's advertising partners use proprietary technologies and human monitoring to detect fraudulent clicks generated by robots or unethical users.
Your Tip Jar earnings are based on the number of tips you receive from contributing readers.
By default, your earnings will be applied towards paying for your TypePad membership via TypePad's Auto-Pay feature, provided you have earned a sufficient amount to cover your next invoice at the time it is due. In addition, you can send money from your earnings account to a PayPal account. You must have at least $15.01 in your available balance to send money a PayPal account. You must also provide Six Apart with your taxpayer information before your account can be credited, or your earnings made available to you via PayPal. Why do I need to submit my taxpayer information?
TypePad Auto-Pay is a feature that automatically pays your monthly or annual TypePad subscription fees from your earnings. Your earnings will be applied toward your invoice only after you have earned sufficient funds to cover the entire amount of the invoice and payments via Auto-Pay are not refundable. To take advantage of TypePad Auto-Pay, you must first provide your taxpayer information to Six Apart. Six Apart is required by law to collect taxpayer information before distributing earnings from TypePad's commerce features.
Why do I need to submit my taxpayer information?
To comply with U.S. tax laws, Six Apart must collect your taxpayer information before earnings from commerce features are made available to you. Your taxpayer information is securely stored by Six Apart and is subject to Six Apart's Privacy Policy. Any information presented within the help pages of TypePad or within TypePad's application interface should not be construed as tax advice. Consult a tax advisor for help on tax questions specific to you or your business. View Commerce Terms of Service.
What is the deadline for submitting my taxpayer information?
Until we receive your taxpayer information, Six Apart will hold all distribution of earnings from commerce features. You may still generate earnings using TypePad's commerce features but may not take advantage of TypePad Auto-Pay until we receive your taxpayer information. Six Apart is required by law to collect taxpayer information before distributing earnings from TypePad's commerce features.
What if I earn more money than my TypePad membership costs me?
You can send money from your earnings account to a PayPal account. You must have at least $15.01 in your available balance to send money a PayPal account. You must also provide Six Apart with your taxpayer information before your account can be credited, or your earnings made available to you via PayPal. Why do I need to submit my taxpayer information?
What happens to my earnings if I downgrade my TypePad membership?
The earnings feature is only available to Pro-level members. If you downgrade your membership to Plus or Basic from Pro, we will apply your existing earnings balance towards your downgraded membership account provided that:
What happens to my earnings if I cancel my TypePad account?
If you cancel your TypePad membership at the Plus or Basic levels of service after having downgraded from the Pro level of service, you will lose access to all unused earnings in your account. You can claim these earnings by upgrading your account back to Pro and using the tools offered at that level of service.
If you cancel your TypePad membership at the Pro level of service, you will lose access to your earnings if your balance is less than $15.01. You can claim your earnings balance provided that:
Within 45 days after the cancellation of your TypePad account your earnings will be paid to your PayPal account. See Cancelling Your TypePad Account.
What happens to my earnings if my account is suspended?
You will lose access to your earnings if your account is suspended. You will regain access if your account is re-activated. If the account is not re-activated and is cancelled instead (for example, because of lack of payment for your subscription) you will lose access to your earnings.
What happens if my TypePad membership is prepaid using funds from my earnings account, but subsequently I cancel the account?
Prepayment of your account from your earnings is not refundable.
Can access to Text Ads be denied to me?
Six Apart provides access to text ads through a partnership with Kanoodle. Kanoodle may occasionally reject access to its advertising network to weblogs that have content not suitable for Kanoodle's advertisers or content that is in a foreign language or targeting an audience of foreign readers. Your weblog will also be rejected if it is protected by a password of if it has no content. If your weblog is rejected and you believe that this has occurred by mistake, contact TypePad customer support. While we will make every effort to investigate the matter and turn text ads on for you, our partner Kanoodle has the right to deny you access to its advertising network, as outlined in the terms of service.
Why is my site displaying advertisements for TypePad or Kanoodle?
Ads are provided by Six Apart's partner Kanoodle. These ads will automatically appear on your weblog as soon as Kanoodle approves your account. In the meantime, TypePad ads will temporarily show on your weblog. The same process is repeated if you set up the feature on multiple weblogs in your TypePad account. You will receive a one-time credit of $2.00 in your earnings account for the period that TypePad house ads run on any of your weblogs prior to your Kanoodle approval and provided that you register at least 2,000 page views during that time. See Kanoodle Account Activation.

Why can't I send my entire balance to PayPal?
Your available balance must be at least $15.01 to use this feature. Available balance indicates the amount available to you to send to PayPal from your earnings account. This amount may be less than the total balance of your earnings account because it can take up to 45 days for Six Apart to receive payment for revenues you have generated through Six Apart partners. However, these revenues become available to you to send to PayPal as soon as we receive payment from our partners.
You can also apply your entire earnings balance towards paying for your TypePad subscription via TypePad Auto-Pay.
What if I don't have a PayPal account?
You can set up a PayPal account by going to http://www.paypal.com. Or you can enter an e-mail address for someone to whom you wish to send your earnings. When that person receives the e-mail notification of this payment, the email will contain a link from PayPal allowing that person to set up a PayPal account and retrieve the money. For more information, read this PayPal help note.
Are there other ways to use my earnings?
On the Earnings Settings page, you can edit your taxpayer information, Auto-Pay settings, and see which weblogs have enabled earnings features.
To enable or disable Auto-Pay (see What is TypePad Auto-Pay?) select either the Enable Auto-Pay or Disable Auto-Pay radio button and click Save Changes.
