Now that digital cameras are becoming ubiquitous and Web users are finding a need to share their photos online, one of our biggest requests for TypePad was to add support for easily creating photo albums. So when we set out to create the system, the first feature we added was the ability for users to create attractive, full-featured photo albums that integrate into their sites and don’t require much configuration or photo preparation.
TypePad’s photo albums automatically resize your images to the appropriate size and create individual web pages to display them. Your photo album’s design can be customized with a template builder that’s similar to the weblog template builder. Simply check the boxes to display a photo title, its caption, the date you took the photo, or any other information you want to display on the album’s pages. You can even create a cover page for your album, displaying an introduction or description for your album.
Photo albums in TypePad are completely automatic. Once an image is uploaded, the system will create smart thumbnails, small versions of your images that are automatically cropped and resized to load quickly. The thumbnails link to the full size photos, so the album loads quickly even for people who visit your site on slow connections.
Once you’ve created your album and customized its content, you can choose a style from a built-in selection of color and font choices. The finished product is an album designed to put your photos front and center in the most elegant way possible.
On your Photo Albums tab you will see the Create a new Photo Album area. Fill in the form with the setup information for your new album:
This is what you wish to call your album. The album name will appear on your album pages (in your banner) and in TypePad’s Recently Updated directories (if you choose to make your photo album public).
Your album name can be changed at any time after creating the album by Setting Your Album Preferences.
This is what you want to name the folder that will store all of the pages and photos for your album.
When you typed in the album name in step 1, an album folder name was automatically suggested. You can use this suggestion or type a different folder name to use for your album.
Every album is stored in its own folder. The album folder name is added to the end of your main URL, in the photos directory. A short album folder name will keep your photo album URL short:
http://example.typepad.com/photos/name/
Currently the album folder name cannot be changed (though photos can be cloned to another album) so it works best to set a suitable folder name when creating the album.
Public photo albums display in the TypePad Recently Updated Photo Albums list at typepad.com. Use the “Make this album public?” setting to set your album as public or not.
The publicity of an album can be changed at any time after creating the album by Setting Your Album Preferences.
Press the button to create your new photo album and you will be sent to the Manage page for the new album. See Adding Photos to Your Photo Album to get started adding photos.
On your Photo Albums tab, you can remove an album from your account using the
Delete Album link in the shortcuts area for the album.
After clicking the Delete link, a popup confirmation will open where you need to confirm the removal of the album.
This change can not be undone, and the album will be permanently removed from your account, so make sure to delete carefully. This will remove the album folder and everything in it.
